Most people who come to us about Sculptra have noticed the same thing. Their face has lost something.
Not lines. Not texture. Something underneath. The cheeks have flattened, the temples have hollowed slightly, and the whole face reads as tired or drawn even on a good day. Makeup sits differently. Photographs look older than they should.
That is volume loss, and it is the one thing a skin treatment cannot fix.
What Sculptra actually is
Sculptra is a collagen biostimulator. Its active ingredient is poly-L-lactic acid, a material that has been used safely in medicine for decades, long before it was used in aesthetics.
It is not a filler, and that distinction matters more than any other thing on this page.
A filler adds volume directly. You have the treatment, the volume is there, you can see it that day. Sculptra does not do that. Instead, the poly-L-lactic acid prompts your body to produce its own collagen in the area where it is placed. Over the following weeks and months, that new collagen rebuilds the structure that has been lost.
So you are not having volume put in. You are growing it back.
It works underneath, not on the surface
This is the part that gets confused most often, and it is why Sculptra frequently gets grouped in with skin boosters and polynucleotides when it does not belong there at all.
Skin boosters and polynucleotides work on your skin. Hydration, glow, elasticity, repair. Sculptra works beneath your skin, on the scaffolding your face sits on.
If your concern is dullness or crepey texture, Sculptra is not the answer. If your concern is that your face has deflated, it very much is.
Plenty of people benefit from both, and we will often recommend a skin treatment alongside a Sculptra course. But they are doing entirely different jobs.
Where it works
Sculptra is used to restore structure across the mid and upper face, most commonly:
- Cheeks, where flattening is usually noticed first
- Temples, where hollowing gives a drawn, gaunt look
- Jawline definition, where lost support has softened the outline
- General facial structure, where the whole face has deflated rather than one area
It is not used around the eyes or lips.
If you have lost weight
This is now one of the most common reasons people come to us about Sculptra.
Your face relies on small fat pads for its shape, and when weight comes off quickly, those go with everything else. The result is a face that can look older and more tired despite the rest of you looking better than it has in years.
It is a frustrating trade, and it is very fixable. Sculptra rebuilds the support that the weight loss removed, without changing what your face looks like.

What to expect, honestly
Sculptra is a journey rather than an appointment, and anyone who tells you otherwise is setting you up to be disappointed.
You will not see much at first. That is normal and expected. Your body needs time to produce collagen. Most people start to notice a change at around six weeks, and the full result develops over several months.
You will usually need more than one vial. How many depends entirely on how much volume has been lost. Some people need one, some need several across a course.
You will need to massage the area as instructed after your treatment. Elizabeth will show you exactly how.
It lasts. Once the collagen has been built, results typically hold for up to two years, which is considerably longer than filler.
It looks like you. Because the change happens gradually and it is your own collagen doing the work, people tend to notice you look well rather than noticing you have had something done.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits you if you have lost facial volume, whether through age or weight loss, and you want a long-lasting, natural result that you are willing to wait for.
It is less likely to suit you if you want an instant change before an event next week, if your main concern is skin quality rather than structure, or if you would rather have something reversible. Filler may be the better option in those cases, and we will say so.

We keep Sculptra priced below much of the market, deliberately. Elizabeth finds the prices charged elsewhere off-putting herself, and takes the view that a treatment is not much use to anyone if the people who would benefit cannot justify it.
